NMMC Plans 600 Automatic Fire Extinguishing Systems

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) is taking steps to improve fire safety in its civic buildings by installing automatic fire extinguishing systems near electrical circuits. The initiative is aimed at reducing the risk of fires caused by electrical short circuits and controlling them at an early stage.

NMMC Proposes 600 Fire Extinguishing Systems in First Phase

NMMC has proposed the installation of 1,035 automatic and portable fire extinguishing systems across buildings owned and operated by the civic body. As part of the first phase, the corporation plans to purchase 600 units at an estimated cost of ₹50.99 lakh.

The systems will be positioned close to electrical circuits and other areas where short-circuit fires could occur. They are designed to activate automatically when a fire is detected, helping control the flames before they spread to other parts of a building.

Fire Department Identifies Need for 1,035 Units

The NMMC Fire Department has assessed the fire safety requirements of civic buildings and identified the need for 1,035 automatic fire extinguishing units.

According to officials, electrical short circuits can cause fires to spread quickly, especially in buildings that see regular public activity. Automatic extinguishing systems can provide an additional layer of protection by responding quickly to a fire without requiring immediate manual action.

The initiative is expected to strengthen fire prevention measures and improve safety for residents, visitors and employees using NMMC facilities.

Systems Planned Across Four NMMC Fire Zones

The fire department's assessment has identified different requirements across NMMC's fire station jurisdictions. Vashi requires 153 units, while 591 units have been proposed for the Nerul-CBD Belapur area. Airoli has been assessed to need 149 units, and Koparkhairane requires 142 units.

The distribution is planned based on the fire safety requirements of individual civic facilities and their electrical infrastructure.

Schools and Hospitals Among Key Locations

The proposed fire extinguishing systems will be installed in a wide range of NMMC-owned buildings. These include schools, primary health centers, maternity and child hospitals, public hospitals, libraries, ward offices, community halls, theaters and multipurpose buildings.

Many of these facilities experience regular public movement, making early fire detection and suppression an important part of overall safety planning.

Procurement to Be Completed in Two Phases

NMMC plans to procure the required 1,035 units in two phases. The first phase will cover 600 automatic fire extinguishing systems, with an estimated expenditure of ₹50.99 lakh.

The planned installation is expected to give NMMC buildings an added safety measure against electrical fires. By placing the systems close to electrical circuits, the civic body aims to respond to short-circuit-related fires at an early stage and reduce the possibility of larger incidents.
