PMC Steps Up Filariasis Screening in High-Risk Areas

The Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) has started a special night blood screening campaign to identify cases of lymphatic filariasis, also known as elephantiasis, among migrant workers. The initiative is being carried out under the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme.

Health teams are collecting blood samples from migrant communities living in high-risk areas across Panvel. The screening is being conducted after 8 pm because the parasite that causes filariasis is easier to detect in the bloodstream during nighttime.

The campaign aims to identify infections at an early stage and provide timely treatment to people who test positive.

Screening Across 26 Urban Primary Health Centres

The civic body has identified vulnerable locations under all 26 Urban Primary Health Centres in its jurisdiction. Block-wise night blood collection is being organized in areas where the risk of filariasis is considered higher.

Municipal Commissioner Mangesh Chitale has instructed medical officers, health workers and other departments involved in the campaign to ensure that the screening program is carried out effectively.

According to Chief Medical Officer Dr. Anand Gosavi, locations with a higher number of reported elephantiasis and hydrocele cases have been given priority. Slum areas, migrant settlements and other communities considered vulnerable to the disease are also being covered.

Blood Samples to Be Tested in Laboratories

Eligible members of the migrant population are being screened according to national health guidelines. Blood samples collected during the campaign will be sent for laboratory testing, while health records will be updated on a regular basis.

People who test positive for microfilariae will receive treatment without delay. Health workers will also monitor these patients and provide follow-up support to help ensure that the prescribed course of treatment is completed.

Health Teams Focus on Awareness and Prevention

Along with blood screening, the PMC is working to improve awareness about lymphatic filariasis among migrant workers. Health officials are explaining the importance of testing, early treatment and completing prescribed medication.

Information, education and communication activities are being conducted as part of the campaign. These efforts are being combined with other routine measures aimed at controlling and preventing the spread of filariasis.

PMC Appeals for Cooperation

The Panvel civic administration has appealed to eligible migrant workers to cooperate with health teams and participate in the blood screening drive.

The campaign is expected to help health officials identify infections early, connect affected people with treatment and strengthen ongoing efforts to prevent the spread of lymphatic filariasis across Panvel.
