Parag Shah’s Ghatkopar Experiment: MLA Lives as Beggar for a Day
Tue Sep 15 2026
Maharashtra BJP MLA Parag Shah recently took an unusual step that attracted widespread attention after he spent several hours on the streets of Ghatkopar dressed as a beggar. The Ghatkopar East legislator temporarily gave up his security, vehicle and expensive belongings to experience everyday life from a completely different perspective.
Shah, who declared assets worth more than Rs 3,383 crore in his affidavit for the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections, said the experience helped him understand how people respond when they do not know a person's social or financial status.
Parag Shah Dresses as Beggar in Ghatkopar
Shah took part in the unusual exercise following advice from Jain spiritual guru Namramuni during the ongoing special Jain religious period. With professional makeup used to change his appearance, the MLA made sure that people around him would not easily recognize him.
He then walked through parts of Ghatkopar and approached people for alms. For several hours, he remained away from his usual public image and experienced life without the privileges and recognition associated with his position.
The visuals of Shah in his beggar disguise quickly attracted attention on social media, with many people surprised to see a senior politician taking part in such an unconventional spiritual and personal exercise.
Experience Offers Shah a Different View of Society
After completing the exercise, Shah said the experience gave him an opportunity to reflect on how social status can influence the way people treat one another.
He explained that people who normally approach him with respect because of his position behaved differently when they did not know who he was. The experience, according to Shah, offered an important reminder about the realities of everyday life and human behavior.
By stepping away from his political identity for a few hours, Shah was able to observe ordinary interactions without people knowing that the person asking them for help was actually a wealthy elected representative.
Mumbaikars Show Kindness During the Experience
Shah also spoke about the kindness he experienced from people in Ghatkopar.
During his time on the streets, one person reportedly gave him Rs 20 and encouraged him to buy something to eat. In another touching moment, a samosa seller offered him food without asking for payment after Shah said he did not have any money.
The MLA accepted the food and ate it while continuing his experience in the disguise. He also spent time sitting by the roadside, allowing himself to experience a routine that was very different from his usual life.
For Shah, these interactions highlighted the generosity that can be found among ordinary people and offered a personal lesson about compassion and dignity.
MLA Returns to Meet People After Removing Disguise
The experience did not end when Shah removed his makeup. He reportedly returned to some of the locations he had visited earlier and interacted with people he had met while disguised as a beggar.
This gave him an opportunity to see the same people again after his real identity was known. The contrast helped him reflect further on how appearances, social standing and public perception can shape human interactions.
Parag Shah’s Rs 3,383 Crore Wealth Adds to Public Interest
Shah's experiment received additional attention because of his significant declared wealth.
In his affidavit for the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections, Shah declared total assets of more than Rs 3,383 crore, making him the richest candidate in the state at the time. A businessman with interests associated with the real estate sector, he had previously served as a corporator in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation before entering the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.
His decision to temporarily leave behind his security, vehicle and expensive possessions and experience life as a beggar therefore stood out as an unusual personal and spiritual exercise.
The Ghatkopar experience has since sparked discussion about humility, social status, compassion and the way people treat others based on appearance and perceived position.
