PM Modi to Dedicate 3 Western DFC Sections at JNPA

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to dedicate three sections of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) to the nation and flag off freight trains from Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) on September 8, 2026. The event marks another major step in expanding India’s dedicated freight railway network and improving the movement of goods across key industrial regions.

The project is expected to strengthen links between manufacturing centers and major ports, improve logistics efficiency and reduce pressure on the existing railway network.

Western Dedicated Freight Corridor Links Uttar Pradesh And Maharashtra

The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor stretches about 1,506 kilometers from New Dadri in Uttar Pradesh to New JNPT in Maharashtra. The route passes through Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat before reaching Maharashtra, connecting several important industrial and logistics centers along the way.

The WDFC is designed to support faster and more efficient freight transportation. It also enables double-stack container trains to move goods between industrial hubs and ports, helping improve connections for domestic trade and exports.

WDFC And EDFC Create a Larger Freight Network

The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor works alongside the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC), creating a dedicated freight network of about 2,843 kilometers.

The EDFC covers nearly 1,337 kilometers from New Sahnewal in Punjab to New Sonnagar in Bihar. It connects several major manufacturing and industrial areas across northern India and provides a dedicated route for goods trains.

Together, the two corridors are designed to increase freight capacity, improve reliability and reduce conflicts between freight and passenger trains on busy railway routes.

Dedicated Freight Corridors to Ease Pressure on Rail Network

A key advantage of dedicated freight routes is that goods trains can operate separately from passenger services. This allows freight movement to become more predictable while creating additional capacity on existing railway lines.

The improved network can support the movement of containers, industrial products and other goods between manufacturing centers, logistics hubs and ports. Better rail connectivity can also help businesses move products more efficiently across long distances.

New Freight Corridor Planned to Expand Connectivity

The government has also announced plans for a third Dedicated Freight Corridor in the Union Budget. The proposed route will begin at Dankuni in West Bengal and connect with Gujarat through Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra.

In Maharashtra, authorities are also examining the feasibility of developing a connection parallel to the Samruddhi Mahamarg. If taken forward, the proposal could further improve freight connectivity across important industrial regions.

JNPA Event Highlights Maharashtra’s Role in Freight Growth

The September 8 event at JNPA is expected to highlight the growing importance of Maharashtra in India’s freight and logistics network. With major ports, industrial zones and manufacturing centers, the state is an important link between domestic production and international markets.

The expansion of dedicated freight corridors is aimed at building a faster, more connected and efficient logistics system. By separating freight operations from passenger services and improving port connectivity, the network is expected to support stronger supply chains, smoother cargo movement and India’s broader manufacturing and economic growth plans.
