The Maharashtra government has approved the construction of a memorial dedicated to Veer Jivaji Mahale near the foothills of the historic Pratapgad Fort. An initial allocation of ₹1 crore has been sanctioned for the first phase of the project, which aims to honor one of the most respected warriors in Maratha history while strengthening heritage tourism in the state.

The announcement was made by Tourism Minister Shambhuraj Desai during the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on Thursday. He said the decision was taken jointly by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde after repeated requests from organizations committed to preserving the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Government Responds to Long-Standing Demand for Memorial

According to the Tourism Minister, the proposal gained momentum after Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's recent visit to Mahabaleshwar, where several Shivaji Maharaj organizations appealed to the government to recognize Veer Jivaji Mahale's contribution to Maratha history.

Following discussions between the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister, the state approved the project and assigned the Tourism Department to build the memorial on government-owned land located near Pratapgad Fort.

Officials said the project reflects the government's commitment to preserving Maharashtra's rich historical heritage and recognizing important figures whose contributions shaped the Maratha Empire.

Who Was Veer Jivaji Mahale?

Veer Jivaji Mahale is remembered as the trusted bodyguard of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and one of the unsung heroes of the Maratha Empire.

He played a decisive role during the Battle of Pratapgad on November 10, 1659, when Shivaji Maharaj faced Bijapur General Afzal Khan. Historical accounts describe how Mahale acted quickly to stop a deadly attack on Shivaji Maharaj, helping save the Maratha ruler's life during one of the most important battles in Indian history.

His bravery is celebrated through the famous Marathi saying:

"Hota Jiva Mhanun Vachla Shiva," meaning "Had Jiva not been there, Shiva would not have survived."

The phrase has become a lasting tribute to Mahale's courage and loyalty.

Tourism Department to Develop Memorial Near Pratapgad Fort

The memorial will be developed by the Maharashtra Tourism Department on land already under its control near Pratapgad Fort.

The first phase of development will use the sanctioned ₹1 crore to create a well-designed monument that reflects Mahale's historic contribution. While detailed design plans are yet to be released, officials expect the project to become an important landmark for visitors interested in Maratha history.

The addition of the Veer Jivaji Mahale Memorial is expected to enrich the visitor experience by highlighting the role played by one of the battle's greatest heroes.

Tourism experts believe heritage-focused projects like this encourage historical education while supporting local tourism and economic activity around important cultural sites.

State officials said social organizations, historians, public representatives, and Shivaji Maharaj followers have been requesting a dedicated memorial for Veer Jivaji Mahale for many years.
