Pune Infrastructure Grows with 18,000 Crore Road Projects

Massive Elevated Highway Network Aims to Cut Traffic, Improve Connectivity, and Support Pune Metro Expansion

Pune is set for a major transportation upgrade after Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis launched three large elevated road projects worth nearly ₹18,000 crore. The new corridors are designed to reduce heavy traffic, improve regional connectivity, and create faster travel routes for commuters entering and leaving the city.

The foundation stone ceremony was held on Saturday in the presence of Maharashtra Public Works Minister Shivendra Raje Bhosale. The projects are part of a broader effort by the Central and Maharashtra governments to modernize Pune's transport network as the city continues to witness rapid urban growth.

Three Elevated Road Projects to Transform Pune's Road Network

The infrastructure package includes three major elevated highways that will improve travel across some of the busiest routes in the Pune region.

The projects include:

• 53.4-km Pune–Shirur Elevated Expressway
• 31.5-km Hadapsar–Yavat Elevated Highway
• 53.2-km Talegaon–Chakan–Shikrapur Elevated Road

Together, these elevated corridors are expected to reduce travel time, improve freight movement, and ease congestion on national highways that experience high daily traffic.

The projects also support the Central government's long-term vision of creating faster and safer road transportation systems across Maharashtra.

Projects Planned Alongside Pune Metro Expansion

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the elevated roads have been carefully planned to complement Pune's expanding Metro network rather than compete with it. The integrated approach is expected to strengthen public transportation while improving road connectivity across the metropolitan region.

He also announced that another important project—the Pune–Nashik Phata Road—is moving closer to construction. According to him, land acquisition for the project is almost complete, and its foundation stone is expected to be laid within the next two to three weeks.

Officials believe these road and Metro projects together will create a more efficient transportation system capable of supporting Pune's growing population and industrial expansion.

Purandar International Airport Project Gains Momentum

During the event, Fadnavis also shared an update on the proposed Purandar International Airport, one of Maharashtra's most significant aviation infrastructure projects.

He said more than half of the required land has already been acquired, and the tendering process is expected to begin soon. Once completed, the airport is expected to reduce pressure on Pune Airport while improving domestic and international air connectivity for western Maharashtra.

The airport is also expected to support industrial growth, tourism, logistics, and future investments in the region.

Several Major Pune Infrastructure Projects Moving Ahead

Apart from the newly launched elevated highways, the Maharashtra government confirmed that work is progressing on several other large transportation projects.

These include:

• Pune Outer Ring Road
• Pune Inner Ring Road
• High Capacity Mass Transit Route (HCMTR)

These projects are expected to improve connectivity between residential areas, industrial zones, logistics hubs, and upcoming commercial developments while reducing travel delays across the city.

Urban planners believe the combined impact of these projects could significantly improve mobility over the coming years.

Nitin Gadkari Says Pune Needs Modern Traffic Solutions

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari highlighted Pune's growing traffic challenges during his address. He said the city has become one of India's most congested urban centers due to rapid economic growth and rising vehicle numbers.

According to Gadkari, highways connecting Pune with Mumbai, Solapur, Nashik, and Kolhapur are currently handling record traffic volumes, making congestion a daily challenge for commuters and commercial vehicles alike.

He explained that widening existing highways is becoming increasingly difficult because of limited land availability and the challenges involved in acquiring additional land in densely developed areas.

As a result, the government has chosen elevated corridors as a long-term solution. These structures can increase road capacity without requiring extensive land acquisition while helping traffic move more efficiently.

Gadkari said the projects reflect the government's commitment to using modern engineering solutions to solve urban transportation problems and improve road infrastructure across the country.
