Ramakrishna Nagar Khar Redevelopment Gets Cabinet Approval

Ramakrishna Nagar in Khar West, Mumbai, is set for a major transformation after the Maharashtra Cabinet approved the group redevelopment of 19 MHADA buildings. The decision also clears the way for appointing a developer for the project.

The Cabinet meeting was chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The redevelopment is expected to give residents safer and more modern homes while improving the overall living environment in the area.

Cabinet Approves Group Redevelopment in Khar West

The Ramakrishna Nagar Cooperative Housing Society is part of Mumbai’s older MHADA residential colonies. With the Cabinet’s approval, the redevelopment process can now move ahead through a planned group redevelopment model.

The project is expected to address the needs of residents living in aging buildings and create better housing facilities in their place. MHADA officials, including Vice President and CEO IAS Sanjeev Jaiswal, are associated with the authority’s ongoing efforts to move redevelopment projects forward across Mumbai.

Ramakrishna Nagar Covers More Than 25,000 Square Meters

The Ramakrishna Nagar Cooperative Housing Society occupies approximately 25,523.90 square meters of land in Khar West.

The complex has 19 buildings, including 18 residential buildings and one office building. The buildings were constructed around 1985 and are now more than four decades old.

The age of the structures has increased the need for redevelopment. The latest Cabinet approval is expected to provide a clear path for replacing the existing buildings with new residential facilities.

MHADA Colonies Were Developed for Affordable Housing

Mumbai’s older MHADA colonies were developed to provide affordable homes for middle and lower-income families.

Between the 1950s and 1960s, 56 residential colonies were developed through the Mumbai Division of MHADA. Together, these colonies included 114 housing societies, with Ramakrishna Nagar in Khar West among them.

Over the years, several of these properties have aged and now require redevelopment to meet modern housing and safety requirements.

Some Ramakrishna Nagar Plots Already Transferred

MHADA has already distributed three plots in the Ramakrishna Nagar complex to the cooperative housing society on an ownership basis. These include plots numbered 5, 7 and 8.

However, plot number 18 and the land next to the office building, identified as building number 1, are outside the scope of the group redevelopment plan.

The remaining land will be redeveloped through MHADA after the appointment of a suitable developer and completion of the required procedures.

High-Powered Committee to Help Speed Up the Project

The Maharashtra government has also approved the creation of a high-powered committee to help move the redevelopment process forward.

The committee will be headed by the Secretary of the Housing Department. It will monitor important aspects of the project and address issues that could otherwise cause delays.

The move is aimed at ensuring that the redevelopment progresses in a coordinated manner and that key decisions are taken efficiently.

Residents Expect Safer and Modern Homes

For residents of Ramakrishna Nagar, the redevelopment decision brings renewed hope for improved housing conditions.
