Thane Municipal Corporation Approves Permanent PAP Homes for 59 Bandal Chawl Families Affected by Railway Station Project
The Thane Municipal Corporation will provide permanent rehabilitation homes to 59 eligible Bandal Chawl families in Naupada displaced by the upcoming Thane-Mulund suburban railway station project.
The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has approved permanent Project Affected Persons (PAP) housing for 59 eligible families from Bandal Chawl in Naupada, Thane. The families are affected by the development of the new Thane-Mulund suburban railway station and will receive permanent homes instead of temporary rental accommodation.
The decision follows a biometric survey that identified 59 eligible families for rehabilitation. After discussions with civic officials and local representatives, the residents unanimously chose permanent PAP housing as their preferred option.
TMC Approves Permanent Housing for 59 Displaced Families
The housing decision was finalized during a meeting at the TMC headquarters attended by Shiv Sena Member of Parliament Naresh Mhaske, senior BJP leader Sanjay Waghule, Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao, and Additional Municipal Commissioner Prashant Rode.
During the meeting, residents were informed about the available rehabilitation options. They clearly expressed their preference for permanent homes under the Project Affected Persons scheme rather than temporary rental accommodation.
MP Naresh Mhaske said the administration had been instructed to begin the necessary procedures to allocate permanent houses in line with the residents' unanimous decision.
The TMC will provide the housing units through its PAP housing quota acquired from the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA). The civic body will now proceed with the required administrative formalities for transferring the homes to the eligible families.
Biometric Survey Confirms Eligibility of 59 Bandal Chawl Families
A biometric survey conducted before the meeting helped establish the eligibility of the affected residents. Based on the survey results, 59 families were identified for rehabilitation under the project.
Local representatives emphasized that the affected families should receive proper housing support because the municipal corporation is directly involved in developing infrastructure around the new railway station.
Sanjay Waghule highlighted the importance of ensuring fair rehabilitation for residents affected by the infrastructure project. He noted that the TMC's role in developing feeder roads and other supporting infrastructure made it important to address the housing needs of displaced families.
The residents also agreed to complete the necessary administrative formalities and pay applicable fees required for the housing allocation.
Why Permanent PAP Housing Was Chosen Over Rental Accommodation
The TMC generally provides rental accommodation to residents displaced from unsafe or dilapidated buildings. However, families affected by infrastructure projects may qualify for permanent housing under the Project Affected Persons framework.
In this case, the municipal administration presented both options to the Bandal Chawl residents. The families unanimously selected permanent homes, providing them with a long-term rehabilitation solution instead of temporary rental arrangements.
The decision is expected to offer greater housing security to the affected families as the railway station project moves forward.
Thane-Mulund Railway Station Project Aims to Improve Connectivity
The new suburban railway station between Thane and Mulund is being developed in coordination with Indian Railways and the Thane Municipal Corporation. The project aims to ease congestion at existing railway stations and improve suburban rail connectivity for commuters.
The TMC is also responsible for developing feeder roads and related urban infrastructure around the project site. These improvements are expected to support access to the new station and strengthen local connectivity.
As infrastructure development progresses, the rehabilitation of affected residents remains an important part of the project.
Bandal Chawl Residents Welcome the Housing Decision
Residents of Bandal Chawl welcomed the approval of permanent PAP housing and thanked Naresh Mhaske and Sanjay Waghule for supporting their rehabilitation demands.
With 59 families identified as eligible and the permanent housing option approved, the TMC is set to move ahead with the allocation process. The decision marks an important step toward providing long-term housing security to families affected by the Thane-Mulund railway station project.
