Fast Rail Journey and Teamwork Help Save a Life in Landmark Medical Mission

Indian Railways has achieved a historic milestone by successfully transporting a live human heart for the first time using the Mumbai Central–Gandhinagar Capital Vande Bharat Express. The life-saving mission carried the donor heart from Surat to Ahmedabad, allowing doctors to perform a critical heart transplant within the required time.

The successful operation highlighted the speed, reliability, and efficiency of the Vande Bharat Express, along with the outstanding coordination between Indian Railways, Western Railway, the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Gujarat Police, and medical professionals.

Green Corridor Speeds Up Heart Transfer

The donor heart was transported on Train No. 20901 and safely reached Ahmedabad Railway Station. From Platform No. 1, the organ was immediately moved to the U.N. Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre through a specially created green corridor.

The smooth coordination ensured there were no delays, allowing the medical team to begin the life-saving transplant procedure on schedule.

Every Minute Matters in Organ Transport

Ahmedabad Divisional Railway Manager Ved Prakash described the mission as a proud achievement for Indian Railways.

He said that every minute is critical during organ transportation and that the successful operation became possible because of excellent teamwork between Indian Railways, the RPF, Gujarat Police, transplant coordinators, and healthcare professionals. He added that saving human lives is not only the railway's responsibility but also its highest priority.

A New Role for Indian Railways in Emergency Healthcare

This first-ever live heart transport by train marks an important step in using railway infrastructure for emergency medical services. While Vande Bharat trains are known for their speed and punctuality, this mission proved they can also play a vital role in transporting time-sensitive organs safely over long distances.

The successful operation demonstrated how close coordination between railway officials, security agencies, and medical teams can make a real difference during critical emergencies.

Vande Bharat Expands Beyond Passenger Service

The landmark mission shows that Indian Railways is evolving beyond passenger and freight transportation. With its modern network and high-speed services, Vande Bharat is now proving to be a dependable partner in emergency healthcare, helping save lives when every second counts.
