New Mumbai Rail Terminal Expected to Ease Congestion and Improve Long-Distance Train Operations

Mumbai’s railway infrastructure is getting a major upgrade as Western Railway moves ahead with its ₹76.48 crore Jogeshwari Coaching Terminal project, which is now more than halfway complete and expected to begin operations by January 2027.

The upcoming terminal is designed to support long-distance Mail and Express trains, helping reduce pressure on existing railway terminals and making train movement smoother across Mumbai’s busy rail network.

Railway officials confirmed that physical work on the project has reached nearly 55 percent completion. Western Railway General Manager Ram Shray Pandey has identified January 2027 as the target timeline for opening the facility.

New Terminal to Strengthen Train Operations Across Mumbai

Once operational, the Jogeshwari Coaching Terminal will provide dedicated facilities for receiving, parking, and dispatching long-distance trains.

The project is expected to improve train punctuality, increase operational flexibility, and reduce congestion at key stations where train turnaround currently creates delays.

Officials believe the terminal will play an important role in improving passenger convenience while making railway operations more efficient.

Civil Construction Work Moves Ahead Rapidly

Construction work at the site has shown significant progress across several key areas.

The G+2 allied services building is almost complete, with structural work finished and interior work currently underway. Meanwhile, construction of the G+3 station building has reached around 40 percent completion, and roof slab work has already been completed.

Development of all three platform walls has crossed the 70 percent mark. The platform roofing structure is also progressing well, with support columns already installed.

Infrastructure and Track Development Gain Momentum

Supporting infrastructure is also moving forward steadily.

The underground water storage system has reached approximately 80 percent completion. Drainage systems and RCC box drain construction are currently around 30 percent complete.

Track laying for approximately 3.5 track kilometres has started, although material procurement and initial groundwork remain in progress.

In addition, plans to extend the Foot Over Bridge are moving closer to implementation after receiving approval for the General Arrangement Drawing.

Key Approvals Cleared as Project Moves Toward Completion

Railway authorities stated that most major engineering approvals have already been secured for station buildings, platform structures, underground facilities, and other construction components.

Approval for the circulating area layout is currently under review, marking another important step toward completing the project.

With construction advancing steadily, Western Railway’s Jogeshwari Coaching Terminal is shaping up to become an important addition to Mumbai’s rail infrastructure by early 2027.
